Charm operation in Albion

This was supposed to be Sarkozy’s poker bluff; his state visit to the United Kingdom was supposed to be sumptuous to erase the numerous mistakes of the last months. The charm operation was a success. To a degree...

Olympics: Paris bursts into flame

This post is also available in: German
We were warned: "Get prepared for some games !" And it seems like the Olympics events happened a bit earlier. Indeed Monday April, 7th the flame tour stopped in Paris and the least we could say is that it has been brought out of track. Despite the €400 000 security staff, the pro-Tibet demonstrators definetely made their point in order to support the Dalai-Lama people. Will Beijing hear their claim? That is less certain...

Europe and the Small Screen

Europe is not the most telegenic topic. In any case, this is what we say. But why this reluctance? Maybe because of unfamiliarity with the political figures. Not easy to find interest in sequences on gloomily dressed strangers emerging from a meeting with armloads of files! And when the 8 O’clock news talks about Europe, it is often to announce a new directive, illustrated by a shot of the European Commission or the European Parliament. That being said, these subjects are sometimes followed by a series of interpretations. And there, it becomes interesting and even telegenic!

The French football blues

The memory dated back to 15 years ago. 1993, the Olympique de Marseille team won the Champion’s league cup. Since that day: it seems like the desert. No French club has succeeded in reaching the top European football heights. While the Real Madrid won the prestigious cup nine times, seven times for the Milan AC, Liverpool chalked it up five times, four times for the Bayern of Munich; compared to this prize lists, French performances look pale.

Europe, a discreet revolutionary

Sometimes, we are caught in moments of doubt. Faith falters and convictions subside. In these moments, it is all too tempting to indulge in cynicism and relativism. Sometimes Europe disappoints us. Something saying to the world that this is the model for a new millennium; see how we will do away with old power schemes, well ordered hierarchies and ancient myths

An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of Mundane life of A Student: A Presentation

There is nothing more thrilling than a public performance, especially when it is done in French which still, after six months of serious efforts, is not my mother tongue. This week I had my true baptism of fire – my first exposé en oral, a presentation. It also tested how well I had managed to soak up the golden rules of the méthode francaise.

Was Chirac strongly pro- European?

At the moment when Nicolas Sarkozy experiments one of the most memorable slap in the face of French history – his collapse in public polls was just as quick as his power boosting – dinosaurs are making their come back.

The chief of the Gallic village at the Agriculture Show Expo

We are getting used to Nicolas Sarokzy’s commotions; the insult he pronounced at the Agriculture Show Expo was just another example. However, the agricultural exhibition taking place at the Versailles gate gave him the opportunity to reshape both the agricultural common policy and the agricultural policy of the European Union in the frame of the WTO according to his own understanding. What will Brussels and our European neighbours think about it?
